We did it. We finally did it. For almost two years, we have hemmed and hawed on this podcast about how we love movies but the Oscars sucks. For almost 90 years, the Oscars have been Hollywood’s lavish self-congratulations that in some way or another always manages to embarrass true movie lovers the world over. In 1957, it was Around the World in 80 Days… I’ve never heard of it you say?... that beat classics like The Ten Commandments and Giant for best picture. In 1969, it was when 2001: A Space Odyssey wasn’t even nominated for best picture. In 1990 Driving Miss Daisy won best picture. Driving Miss Daisy. This is also the body that snubbed Al Pacino’s Godfather performanced, but gave him an Oscar for Scent of a Woman. This is the body that never gave Alfred Hitchcock an Oscar for best director. This is the body that didn’t give Humphrey Bogart the Oscar for his Casablanca performance.

Point is, they don’t know what they’re doing or how to do it. So Sonia and I have put our money where our mouths are and reformed the Oscars and tonight we’re going to tell you how the Oscars would go if the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences was serious about honoring great movies AND making a watchable telecast.

We have written three blog entries on fixing the Oscars. Part 1 talks about what’s wrong with the current Oscars. Part 2 talks about how the nominating and awards would work if they were done right (hint, comedies and genre movies would stop getting fucked over), and Part 3 talks about what the 2018 Oscars would be like in the alternate universe where we ran the awards.

We do a deep dorking out on 1978’s Superman: The Movie starring Christopher Reeves, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, Glenn Ford and two stars spanning the movie ages… Marlon Brando as Superman’s Kryptonian father, Jor-El and the Little Rascals Jackie Cooper as Perry White, editor of the Daily Planet. Directed by Richard Donner and scored with what might be my favorite John Williams score of all time, Superman was the first big studio comic book movie and is still seen as the model for making a comic book movie right on the silver screen.

Joining us to talk about it is a voice you may know, he’s my favorite living critic, an accomplished and much sought after movie music writer, and the host of the new podcast Bond of Geekdom, Jeff Bond.

We review Black Panther, one of the most anticipated movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe phenomena. Directed by Ryan Coogler from a script he wrote with Joe Robert Cole The Black Panther stars a murderer’s row of talented African and African-American actors headlined by Chadwick Boseman. Joining him is Coogler’s CREED star Michael B. Jordan along with Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong'o, Forest Whitaker, Sterling K. Brown, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya. Also there’s Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis.

Black Panther is the 18th MCU movie, and for those of you playing the James Bond Comparison game, the 18th James Bond movie was the supernaturally forgettable Tomorrow Never Dies. Panther tells the story of T'Challa the new king of Wakanda and the latest in a long line of Black Panthers as he ascends to the throne of his mysterious kingdom while at the same time protect it from threats outside and in. Speaking of James Bond, Panther is a crazy mix of James Bond, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and Iron Man.

On this episode, we’re going back a bit to a format we haven’t used in awhile. We’re having more than one segment. First up, reviews and reviewers. We got our first review on a podcast reviewing show and it was not a thrillride which kept us on the edge of our seat. More on that soon. In our second segment, we talk a bit about what we’ve been dorking out about, what’s going on with this show, and some changes that are coming up in the months ahead.

Listener's note: We... Chris... incorrectly announces this episode as 96 instead of 97. We... he... didn't fix it because of laziness. And because it's not about what Star Trek deep nerding is all about.

Which brings us to... We welcome back Star Trek expert, journalist and and author Jeff Bond (The Art of Star Trek: The Kelvin Timeline, the new book on Seth McFarland's The Orville) as well as Alexandra August of DiscoTrek return to talk about Star Trek: Discovery Episode 14: The War Without, The War Within.

Actor Daniel Day-Lewis, a three-time Oscar winner who is often cited as one of the best actors working today, says that PHANTOM THREAD is his final movie. He hasn’t really given a reason why he’s retiring, but I suspect that a “serious artist” such as Daniel Day-Lewis isn’t really interested in playing a villian in the latest Marvel movie, and since that’s mainly what Hollywood is making these days, it’s no wonder he’s thinking about calling the whole thing off.

To celebrate, or maybe in honor of Daniel Day Lewis’s performance in PHANTOM THREAD, we’ve decided to do some serious deep dorking out about in first big studio movie, THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS with AJ Muller, writer for Daily Grindhouse and Horrorview.
