Rundown: We review the long-awaited Wonder Woman movie with Margo D from the Book vs. Movie podcast and Laura Smith (better half of co-host Christopher Allan Smith). We then revisit our offensiveness/comedy thread in the wake of the Kathy Griffin/Bill Maher controversies this week. And finally, we end our show with what we’re dorking out about this week, including Chris winning another Emmy (really) and the return of Sonia's Old Movies, New Beer podcast.
Topic 1: Wonder Woman Review
Unless you’ve been living on a magically hidden island you know that “Wonder Woman,” directed by Patty Jenkins, opened this weekend. There’s a lot riding on this movie. It’s not just another comic book movie. The DC Cinematic Universe really needs a movie that competes on Marvel’s level - which is a critically acclaimed and long-running franchise. “Wonder Woman” needs to be more than a box office hit, and prove that DC is capable of making a movie that audiences and critics love. And it needs to prove that a female superhero movie will make money. And it’s the first big superhero blockbuster directed by a woman. These are high stakes, and just like women have to do all the time in their careers - Wonder Woman needs to be better a movie and make more money than its male counterparts just to be considered equal. Smith will hate that I said that, but it’s true.
Well, this weekend it made more than $100 million, and it’s the biggest opening for a movie directed by a woman. But is it any good? We’ve brought in reinforcements for this review, a couple of real wonder women, Laura Smith, which is Smith’s better half, and Margo D. from the podcast Book vs. Movie is here to talk about “Wonder Woman” with us.

In our second segment, we have not one BUT TWO movie reviews for you, including “Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Baywatch.” And finally, we end our show with what we’re dorking out about this week, including the women-only screenings of “Wonder Woman” and savor-watching, which is the anti-binge watching.
Topic 1: War Machine on Netflix
Netflix, the little company that started out sending DVDs through the mail has grown over the last 10 years into the second most prestigious, interesting power in TV. In comedy, in dramas, in mini-series, they are now the first stop whenever the best creatives in Hollywood are pitching their new shows, with HBO largely falling to second. Their success, with House of Cards, Master of None, the adult Marvel stable of shows, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Making a Murderer… the list speaks for itself.
But now, they’re looking to move into movies in a serious, prestigious way. One of the first big swings at the large-scale Hollywood movies is this weekend’s War Machine, from Brad Pitt’s production company and starring Pitt as an army general trying to bring a rational end to the war in Afghanistan.
What does this move mean for Netflix’ continuing campaign to eat everything in Hollywood? Will they become a big force in prestige movies, as they have with TV, or is this a bridge too far? Also, is the movie any good?
Topic 2: Our “reviews” of “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Baywatch”
SONIA’S INTRO: We got two movie reviews for you: “Pirates Of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Baywatch.” Let’s start with “Pirates Of The Caribbean,” which was the #1 movie at the box office this weekend, pillaging more than $62 million. It’s the fifth movie in the franchise based on the popular Disneyland ride, starring Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, as well as Javier Bardem, and the return of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. “Baywatch” was the 98-pound weakling at the box office this weekend. “Pirates” kicked sand in its eyes. It made $18 million this weekend and got scathing reviews. It has 19% on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie reboot stars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, and it’s based on the 90s TV show phenomenon, starring David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, was about lifeguards who spend more time solving crimes than saving people from drowning. I never watched an episode of the show, which I’m not going to lie, I’m not sorry about. I don’t think you need to have seen the show to understand what’s going on in the movie.

Topic 1: Twin Peaks
Unless you’ve been stuck in the Black Lodge for the past few years, you know that “Twin Peaks” returned Sunday night with two of the 18 all-new episodes on Showtime. If you are one of those weirdos who has never watched “Twin Peaks,” then I’m going to explain to you why “Twin Peaks” is kind of a big deal.
Created by filmmaker David Lynch and Mark Frost, there was nothing like “Twin Peaks” on network television in 1990. Now the line between television and movies are blurred. Actually, there are no lines. Movie stars regularly make TV shows, and TV stars make movies; BUT, in 1990, a TV series created by a filmmaker as highly regarded as David Lynch was really unusual and special.
The elevator pitch for Twin Peaks was Agent Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MacLachlan, comes to a small Northwestern town to investigate the murder of the Laura Palmer, the seemingly perfect teenager, the homecoming queen dating the football team captain, etc. etc. But, of course, the show was much more than that. Twin Peaks was a mix of murder mystery, horror, dark comedy and drama. It could be absolutely heartbreaking and absolutely terrifying in the same episode. Creatively, Twin Peaks’s influence cannot overstated. It’s DNA is all over TV shows including genre shows such as “The X-Files” and “Lost” and more recently “Fargo” and “Riverdale,” as well as more mainstream TV such as “Northern Exposure.”
“Twin Peaks” aired for two seasons for a total of 30 episodes. It lost its creative footing after the murder of Laura Palmer was solved midway through the second season, and the show struggled in the ratings and was canceled. Lynch wrote and directed the prequel “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me,” which I think is underappreciated, and a small taste of where Lynch would later serve up with “Lost Highway” and “Mulholland Drive.”
So, that’s why everybody is so excited that Twin Peaks is back. We watched the first episode, and we’ve got good news that gum you like is going to come back in style. Smith, what did you think about the return of “Twin Peaks?”
Topic 2: Alien: Covenant with Peter Brown
Over 30 years ago, Ridley Scott directed one of the best science fiction movies and one of the creepiest horror movies, and it was the same movie. That would be 1979’s Alien. Since then he’s made a career of lush, amazing looking movies which are a bit hit and miss on the storytelling side.
That goes double for Prometheus, the 2012 movie marking Scott’s return to the franchise he began. But by then, and maybe until today, the Alien franchise has become one of the most beat up, battered, messed around franchises in Hollywood history. For every classic sequel, like James Cameron’s Aliens, there were two or three deformed creatures, like the possibly underrated David Fincher entry, Alien 3, or the no-holds bar trainwreck like Alien: Resurrection.
When it came out, Prometheus had a lot of fans excited for a top shelf alien story, but the final movie left a divided fanbase, half liking it, half loathing it.

Topic 1: Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Review
Even though it’s only the first week of May, the summer movie season has officially started with the release of “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2,” the 15th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which made $145 million this past weekend, pushing the Marvel Cinematic Universe past $11 billion. The misfits from the first “Guardians Of The Galaxy” return, including Chris Pratt as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, and the voices of Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon and Vin Diesel as Baby Groot. Michael Rooker as Yondu also returns, and we are introduced Mantis an empath who can feel people’s emotions played by Pom Klementieff and Ego The Celestial played by Kurt Russell.
Joining us to talk about “Guardians” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is David Tracy, who co-hosts my other podcast Old Movies, New Beer and works for Chaos Group, which creates the rendering software that is used in pretty much every TV show and movie you love, including “Game Of Thrones,” “The Walking Dead,” “Doctor Strange,” “Rogue One,” “Deadpool” and - of course - “The Spongebob Squarepants Movie.”

Topic 2: The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu
The 10-part miniseries “The Handmaid’s Tale” debuted last week on Hulu. Based on the 1985 book by Margaret Atwood, the miniseries stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Samira Wiley and Alexis Bledel from Gilmore Girls, and is set in a dystopian near-future in which women have no rights. Most women are infertile in this future, but there is a handful of women who can still have children. They are forced to have babies for wealthy and powerful couples. I believe one of the characters actually refers to themselves as “two-legged wombs.” Elisabeth Moss is our narrator and main character, Offred, whose husband is murdered and 8-year-old daughter taken away. We see in flashbacks how we got to this future, and it’s almost scarier to me than the future which women are forced to have babies, but it’s more recognizable. It seems familiar. “They can’t do that. This is blow over.” I’ve said those things, or someone has said them to me. It’s chilling.

Show Rundown: In this week’s episode, we chat about “S-Town,” a podcast from This American Life and Serial. All seven episodes dropped last Tuesday, and we listened to every episode. Is it addictive listening like Serial season one, or is it disappointing like Serial season two? In our second segment, we review the live-action remake of “Ghost In The Shell, and talk about the controversy surrounding the casting and more importantly - is it a good movie? And we end our show by sharing what we are dorking out about, including the series finale of “Big Little Lies,” which concluded LAST NIGHT! We have thoughts and feelings about it.
Topic 1: S-Town and Podcasting as Art
For a podcast which prides itself on talking about stories from far and wide, movies and TV, books and podcasts, we’ve done precious little chatting about podcasts. And now, we may never do it again, because after our discussion of S-Town, it may be obvious the chances of ever finding anything as good as S-Town in this podcasting medium is slim. Yes, this is only supposed to be an intro, but S-Town is a medium defining masterpiece.
It’s been known for awhile the team behind the true crime podcast, Serial, was working on a new podcast which would be released using the Netflix model… all 7 episodes at once. Executive produced by much of the Serial team, Ira Glass, Sarah Koenig among them, S-Town is actually produced by host Brian Reed and his co-producer Julie Snyder. On the surface, it’s about the investigation of a rumored murder by the son of a rich business owner in a small Alabama town. But as anyone who’s listened, it soon bleeds out into something much more revealing, and much more special, than a true crime story.
We won’t reveal much more than that, because the surprises are one of the things which make this so special.
Topic 2: Ghost in the Shell and Americanizing Culture
“Ghost In The Shell,” starring Scarlett Johansson and directed by Rupert Sanders, whose previous directing credits include “Snow White And The Huntsman,” is a live-action remake of the 1995 Japanese anime and book series by the same name. Set in a Blade Runner-inspired future in a Japanese city, Johansson stars as Major, a robot with a human brain, who is trying to stop a criminal who is hacking into people’s minds and controlling them. The movie also stars Juliette Binoche, Pilou Asbæk and Michael Pitt. If that cast for an adaptation of a popular Japanese anime sounds unusual to you, well you are not alone. There is a lot of controversy around the casting of this movie, which puts four white actors in the lead roles with Japanese actors filling out the supporting roles. Some Asian groups this is another example of Hollywood whitewashing, and after seeing the movie I don’t think they are wrong. On top of that, I think this is another example of Hollywood taking a good foreign film, removing the story aspects that made it interesting and special, and creating a boring, lifeless remake. This movie could have addressed the serious topic of what it means to be human; how much technology is too much; and about losing our humanity to technology like HBO’s “Westworld” or the movie “Ex-Machina.” Instead, it’s just a sci-fi action movie that I found to be uninspired and even worse, kinda boring.

It’s a tale as old as time. A song as old as rhyme. It’s “Beauty & The Beast,” the latest Disney live-action remake along the lines of “Alice In Wonderland,” “The Jungle Book” and “Cinderella.”
Directed by Bill Condon, who we will like to remember directed Dreamgirls and Gods & Monsters, but he also directed two Twilight movies, and starring Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as The Beast, Luke Evans as Gaston, Josh Gad as LeFou, with voices by Ewan McGregor, Sir Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson, Audra McDonald and Stanley Tucci.

Last year, Ryan Murphy unleashed on the world The People vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime, one of the guilty and non-guilty TV viewing pleasures of 2016. Spring 2017 arrives with his latest event mini-series, Feud, starring Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis and retelling not only the decades long running gunfight these two legendary actresses had from the 1930s to the 1960s, but also the production of one of the most legendary (lots of legendary going on here, there’s a reason this story is being told 50 years later) horror films of all time: Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. Part a retelling of the end of Hollywood’s first Golden Age, part an examination of the knife fights women can get into with each other (this is almost a mirror version of Don Draper’s vices from Mad Men) and part a Ryan Murphy Wisconsin-class cheese fest, Feud is… well, Sonia, you tell me what you think Feud is.

Topic 2: Big, Little Lies on HBO
“Big Little Lies,” a seven-part miniseries on HBO, starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Alexander Skarsgard and Adam Scott. Based on the book by Liane Moriarty, and created and written by David E. Kelley, the man behind some of your favorite TV shows from the 80s and 90s, including “Ally McBeal,” “Boston Legal,” “Picket Fences,” and Smith’s favorite show, “LA Law.”
Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, who also directed the movies “Dallas Buyers Club” and “Wild,” “Big Little Lies” opens like pretty much every TV show - with a murder. We don’t know who the victim is and we don’t know who did it. Then the story starts from the beginning with an incident between two children at Monterey, California elementary school. Witherspoon is channeling “Election’s” Tracey Flick as the ultimate helicopter mom. Kidman is the seemingly perfect housewife. Dern is a high-powered executive and overprotective mom, and Woodley is the new girl in town with a dark secret. It’s like “Bad Moms,” but more murder-y.

So January 13 saw the arrival of season 1 of Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events based on a series of books by Daniel Handler. It’s a black comedy about three orphaned children who live through, well, the title of the show.
This Netflix version stars Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton, Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes and guest stars a heavy hitting cast with Joan Cusack, Aasif Mandvi, Catherine O'Hara, Don Johnson and Alfre Woodard.
Topic 2: Sherlock - What to do when a story you love goes off the rails
Sherlock finished its fourth season on PBS last week. Sherlock’s seasons are comprised of three 90-minute movies based on the books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and it stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock and Watson.
