Rundown: In this week’s episode, we review KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE, which topped the weekend box office with $39 million. We also talk about ATOMIC BLONDE and wonder if the spy genre is at a crossroads. Are either of these movies any good, and are they the next James Bond? I think Smith and I do not agree on the answers to those questions. In our second segment, friend of the show Mike Richman, our favorite hobbyist historian joins us to talk about the new Ken Burns documentary series THE VIETNAM WAR. And in our final segment, we kick off our weekly recaps and roundtable discussion with Jeff Bond and Alexandra August about STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, which premieres Sunday night. We’ve been talking about this show for more than year.
Topic 1: Kingsman, Atomic Blondes and the Spy Genre?
On Friday,KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE, the sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s irreverent spy hit of 2015 opened to mild reviews and we will have our review in a minute. But in this segment we also wanted to talk about this summer’s ATOMIC BLONDE, Charlize Theron’s entry into the genre once, and maybe still, ruled by James Bond 007. Blonde was directed by David Leitch, who also co-directed the energetic gunfight movie JOHN WICK. That movie struck a lot of action fans as a fun, modern take on the gentleman spy/hitman genre.
But this also comes after JASON BOURNE flamed out last year (remember that was a thing?), and Atomic Blonde, while lauded, underperformed at the box office. So, agents, your mission today is to discuss the current state of the spy movie genre.
Topic 2: Ken Burn’s Vietnam War
One of the problems we don’t talk about much on this show is, well, it’s a show about stories we love. And some weeks, it’s just stories we like. Or stories we watched, or read, or listened to, and frankly they were fine for passing the time, but they didn’t leave us with anything that lingered. And stories that linger is why we love stories in the first place.
But last week legendary documentarian Ken Burns released, along with co-director Lynn Novick, THE VIETNAM WAR, a 10-part, 18-hour examination of America’s involvement in that war. Parts six through 10 started last night and will run through this Thursday on PBS. I’m showing my cards here and saying like his previous great achievements in filmmaking, THE CIVIL WAR, THE ROOSEVELTS, MARK TWAIN, BASEBALL and JAZZ maybe better than all of those, and I’ve discussed the impact THE CIVIL WAR had on me, this series is maybe the best documentary on an American subject I’ve ever seen.
To discuss, we brought back friend of the show Mike Richman, co-host of NOR CAL NEWS NOW but more importantly our favorite hobbyist historian.

Show Rundown: We review Stephen King’s IT, which scared up $117 million at the box office this weekend. Neither of us have read the book so we brought in an expert, Margo D from Book vs Movie. She’s a big Stephen King fan, so Margo is going to stick around for our second segment while we share our favorite Stephen King adaptations. And finally, we will end our show with what we’re dorking out about this week. Another Star Wars movie, another director firing, but does that mean things are on the right track? All that, and some Emmy preview talk after we get rolling.
Topic 1: IT Movie Review
Over the last 40 years, Stephen King has quietly, but not too quietly, been one of the most influential storytellers in Hollywood. More on his body of work in Topic 2, but we say that as a set-up to our review of this last weekend’s monster hit, IT. While King has made his name as a horror writer, he’s expanded out into all kinds of fiction and nonfiction work. What that’s lead to is a total lottery situation when his works are adapted to the big screen. Sometimes we get a classic, like a Stand By Me or Shawshank Redemption or The Shining. Sometimes we get a Dark Tower or Sleepwalkers. So what did we get with It?
It is pure, un-cut horror about a group of kids who discover, as you might expect, there is a supernatural evil at the heart of what appears to be their tranquil New England town.
Joining us today to discuss IT, and later to talk about the towering figure Stephen King is in the world of storytelling, is Margo D from Book vs Movie, whose podcast has charted more than a few King adaptations, including episode by episode reviews of the latest adaptation of Stephen King’s The Mist.
Topic 2: Our Favorite Stephen King Adaptations
While Stephen King has been the undisputed King of the best seller since the 1970s, the era which saw Brian DePalma make King’s first book, Carrie, into a horror classic, a veritable trainload of movies have been based on his stories, not all of them screaming ‘Stephen King’ horror mister. Among these are good movies and classics, like Stand By Me, Apt Pupil, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Misery, even Arnold Schwarzenegger’s camp action flick The Running Man. Added to these are undisputed horror classics, like The Shining and The Dead Zone as well as a huge number of good to middling horror movies like Firestarter, The Mist, Cujo, Needful Things, Children of the Corn, Hearts of Atlantis and the recent TV adaptation 11-22-63.
While we love a lot of these stories, we thought it would be good to have Margo stick around as we try to tackle the big task of naming our favorite Stephen King adaptations. It’s a big task because Stephen King has written more than 90 books and his work has been adapted more than 60 times (but I think 3 or 4 of those are different adaptations of CARRIE). That’s an insane amount of stories. I’m not going to waste a lot of time talking about how crazy it is that Stephen King has written so many books, while I’m still struggling to write one, because that’s a segment for another time. Let’s just dive right in.

Status Check For Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 7

RECAP: The dueling queens, Daenerys and Cersei, get together for a little chat about maybe putting their differences aside and fighting the undead together. Cersei is reluctant, but then after a very tense heart-to-heart with Tyrion, she agrees. Of course, Cersei is a lying liar. She tells Jaime that she plans to just sit it out and wait to see who wins in the fight between good and evil, and she’ll fight the winner. Jaime says, “I’m out.” Theon Greyjoy finally grows a pair and decides to try and free his sister from his uncle’s prison.
Brann tells Sam that the luckiest bastard Jon Snow isn’t really a bastard; he’s not Ned Stark’s bastard son, but really the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, Jon Snow, the luckiest bastard ever, is currently having sex with his aunt Daenerys. Hot! Littlefinger finally gets what he deserves, his throat slit, after the Stark Sisters confront him of all his misdeeds. Oh, and The Night King flies his undead dragon to The Wall and destroys it, and now the undead are marching right on through.

Rundown: On this week’s show we’re talking about Kathryn Bigelow’s new movie, Detroit about the riots, the Algiers Hotel incident. It’s a searing, adult drama about race, police, the changes in American society of the 1960s, and one that has an all-too timely feel today. Wonder Why. We also use this as a jumping off point to talk about dramas for adults and wonder if they’re still a thing. We then talk about a provocative piece in The Guardian by Danny Leigh which asks the question is Hollywood in desperate need of a Bonnie and Clyde moment… more on that in segment two. It’s a good discussion. We then wrap up with our old pal Peter Brown, the Associate Editor of Assignment X, as we do one of our Status Check segments on, what else, Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 5, Eastwatch.
Topic 1: Review of Detroit and the state of Movie Dramas
Is there a movie more timely playing in theaters right now than “Detroit?” Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, and written by Mark Boal, who previously worked together on “The Hurt Locker” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Detroit” tells the true story of the Algiers Motel incident, which happened during the 12th Street riot in 1967 Detroit. The police raided the Algiers Motel believing there was a sniper, and proceeded to beat and torture 9 people, 7 African American men and 2 white women, most of them teenagers. Three African American teenagers were killed by police officers. The film stars Algee Smith, John Boyega, Will Poulter, Jason Mitchell and Anthony Mackie.
The movie about race and police brutality, and after everything that happened this weekend in Charlottesville, and the acquittal after acquittal of police officers in the murder of black men, this movie is set in 1967, but it could be set right now.
Topic 2: Does Hollywood need a shake-up?
For the past few years now, film lovers and movie critics have commented on the rise of the genre film, how wanna-be blockbusters have broken out of summer and seemingly eaten up every month of the movie calendar, and how movies don’t seem to get any love anymore unless there’s some comic book connection. Movies have become very predictable and stale, and have more or less lost their preeminence as the most valuable real estate in pop culture storytelling.
To quote a Battlestar: Galactica, this has all happened before and will happen again. 50 years ago, the old studio system was dying. Big movie after big movies were bombing. But back then those movies weren’t wanna-be blockbusters but bible movies, musicals and westerns… essentially the comic book movie fads of their day.
Then along came a little movie called Bonnie and Clyde, starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, and that movie started a revolution in 1960s filmmaking leading to the golden age of director centered movies in the 1970s, including The Godfather, Taxi Driver, Jaws, Star Wars and on and on. Essentially, Bonnie and Clyde blew up the status quo and made way for a new Hollywood era. Is Hollywood ripe for new Bonnie and Clyde? If so, what would that look like today?
That’s the provocative question we’re going to talk about, with a nod towards Danny Leigh’s article in the Guardian this weeks which asked this same question, and got us thinking.

Rundown: We review the long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower,” starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Does it live up to expectations? The answer is surprisingly long. In our second segment, the men behind HBO’s “Game Of Thrones” announced their next project, a controversial new series called “Confederate,” which is set in the present day and the South had seceded from the Union, and slavery is still legal. We talk about questionable stories and being offended by something you haven’t even seen yet. And speaking of “Game Of Thrones,” Peter Brown from Assignment X joins us to talk about Sunday night’s episode AND last week’s episode since we were on vacation last week.
Topic 1: The Dark Tower and the art of adapting books to film
Sit back folks, this one’s going to be a doozy.
The 1990s was an era of pipe dreams for nerdy story lovers. While more and more genre movies were being made, they missed as much as hit. It seemed moviemakers just couldn’t trust their source material. This was the era where Joel Schumacher took Batman, the raw materials you could use to make The Dark Knight, and chose to make Batman and Robin. Every time a genre movie was made, Hollywood directors and writers would have to put their stamp on it, discarding what fans loved in the source material and replacing it with Hollywoodized versions even while nerd fans dreamed of well-made, direct adaptations of their favorite works. For every Dick Tracy, there was a Saint (starring Val Kilmer, it was awful). For every Contact, starring Jodie Foster, there was a Judge Dredd, starring Sylvester Stallone.
It was a time where the greatest nerd stories ever told were just out of reach. I remember discussions in the back of comic book shops about how great it would be to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings into a fantasy trilogy, doing for fantasy storytelling what George Lucas did for sci fi in his original Star Wars. Or wouldn’t it be cool if they used Marvel comics as a basis for movies, but did it like they did it in comics so the characters could cross over into each other’s movies. The smart money said those things were never going to happen.
But in the early 2000s, Hollywood began to get smart. The did faithful adaptations of The X-Men, then in one glorious year Harry Potter and the first Lord of the Rings book. And they were smashes. The more the learned, the better they did. The Harry Potter series became a classic. The Hunger Games, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead all showed with the right talent using the respect for the source material could make quality, lucrative movies and shows.
But one series stood out, unmade, above many of these. That was Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. Now Stephen King was such a prolific storyteller that there were many undisputed classic movies to his name.. Stand By Me, Misery, The Shawshank Redemption, The Shining, The Dead Zone, Dolores Claiborne, even The Running Man. And the Dark Tower was his magnum opus, his series with the most ardent fans, all begging for a faithful adaptation of this series about a mythic gunslinger traversing a barren, magic filled land to kill a villain who may be the devil himself.
Now surely in the era of Game of Thrones, Harry Potter and The Walking Dead, a studio could see its way clear to do a diligent and modern adaptation of this storytelling icon’s most beloved series.
In fact plans were announced in 2010, with Ron Howard directing the first in a series of movies which was to adapt King’s books into a series of interlocking movies and short-run, Fargo-like TV series. Akiva Goldsman, hot off his Oscar winning screenplay for Howard’s A Beautiful Mind was to help adapt. And then, this, and then that, and then the Hollywood machine ground the idea more and more until Howard dropped out, the ambition was pared down from a seven or eight movie series to a single movie that wasn’t even based off any of King’s existing books. The Dark Tower, which hit theaters this weekend starring Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, and Matthew McConaughey as the Man in Black, is a story which takes place after the last book in the series.
For Goldsman, one of the credited writers and also a writer on Schumacher’s 1990s Batman and Robin, and director Nikolaj Arcel, it’s like the last 20 years didn’t exist. You have one of the most beloved storytellers of the modern era give you eight books of stories, and no, they’re not good enough, you have to replace them with your own story? Did these guys, or Sony, not learn anything from The Lord of the Rings?
Topic 2: HBO’s Confederate and controversy in TV making
No script has been written and not a single frame has been shot, but the HBO show “Confederate” is already engulfed in controversy. Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the men behind “Game Of Thrones” and Nichelle Tramble Spellman, a writer/producer of “The Good Wife” and her husband Malcolm Spellman, a writer and producer of “Empire,” “Confederate” is an alternate-history drama set in modern times in which the South has seceded from the Union, and slavery is legal. Right after the announcement, the Twitterverse was lit up and there were calls for boycotts. A lot of folks don’t love the idea of Benioff and Weiss, two white men who have often faced controversy about “Game Of Thrones” lack of diversity and sexual violence, telling this story, even with the Spellman’s involvement. There are concerns that the timing for this type of show really sucks, because racist Trump supporters are more emboldened than ever. And the flip side, there’s a backlash to the backlash, asking if we’re supposed to offended and start protesting movies and TV shows we haven’t even seen yet? So, yeah, let’s talk about it. Smith, what do you think? Is the outrage premature?

Topic 1: Dunkirk Review and Thoughts on Christopher Nolan
In recent years movies have been discussed in terms of extended universes, reboots and intellectual property which launched a thousand movie tickets. From Hunger Games to Marvel, from Ghostbusters to the upcoming Dark Tower, it seems studios have left the era of director driven films and only think in terms of IP.
One of the very few directors who still stands out as a brand unto himself, as the Spielbergs and Tarantinos did in decades past, is Christopher Nolan. While he did do his time in the comic book mines, by making three of the greatest comic book movies ever made in the Dark Knight trilogy, he’s now thought of as an artistic voice in his own right. From Inception to Interstellar, from The Prestige to this week’s Dunkirk, it seems he’s one of the vanishingly few directors whose name alone can almost guarantee a big opening weekend.
So his latest is Dunkirk, a World War II story about the evacuation of the British and French armies at Dunkirk in one of the darkest moments of the war.

If you’re a dork, geek, nerd or spaz, then you know that Comic Con happened last week in San Diego. I’m joking, because, of course, gone are the days when Comic Con was just just for dorks. Every TV show, every movie participates in Comic Con now. It’s the center of everything pop culture, including “Sharknado 5” directed by friend of the podcast Anthony C. Ferrante (shameless plug). Wikipedia Synopsys: At Dragonstone, the Queen's council starts planning the invasion of Westeros. Daenerys sends the dornishmen along the Greyjoy fleet to Sunspear, the Unsullied to Casterly Rock and decides to not move on to King's Landing yet, intending to install a siege instead. Grey Worm and Missandei declare their love for one another, which they consummate before Grey Worm leaves with the Unsullied. There, Cersei has gathered many lords and insisted on fear for the Dragon Queen and why they should support the Lannister crown instead, promising Randyll Tarly the title of Warden of the South. In the Riverlands, Arya meets with Hot Pie, who tells her of Jon being named King in the North. She decides to return to Winterfell, and in the way she is briefly reunited with her long lost direwolf pet: Nymeria. At Winterfell, Jon Snow leaves for Dragonstone in hopes of getting support of Daenerys Targaryen against the threat of the White Walkers, leaving Sansa in charge. At the Citadel, Sam begins a forbidden treatment for Jorah Mormont's greyscale. Euron Greyjoy's Iron Fleet attacks Yara Greyjoy's, and in the battle, Obara and Nymeria Sand are killed, while Ellaria, Tyene and Yara are captured. Theon Greyjoy flees the carnage in horror.

Topic 1: Game of Thrones Season 7 Opener
Unless you’ve attending dinner parties at House Frey, you know that Game Of Thrones kicked off its 7th season on Sunday, the first of seven new episodes. Next year, its season 8 and final season will have six episodes. Every episode since the show first aired in 2011 has been leading up to these final two seasons. Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have masterfully set up the game board for what is sure to be an epic conclusion. Joining us to talk about Sunday night’s Game Of Thrones is Peter Brown from Assignment X.
Topic 2: War for the Planet of the Apes and What Makes Great Trilogies
That brings us to our review of War for the Planet of the Apes, and a larger discussion of just what is so great about a movie trilogy. There’s nothing quite like a great movie trilogy. Why is that? And does this recent Planet of the Apes trilogy rank among them?
War for the Planet of the Apes is the final movie in the prequelish trilogy of Apes movies which began with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes and 2014’s great Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
Starring Andy Serkis as Caesar, the lab ape-come-Moses-figure to a tribe of intelligent apes living in California after a plague has wiped out 499 of every 500 people, and Woody Harrelson as a human soldier trying to clutch onto the human control of Earth as a second wave of plague might be finishing off humans for good, War has been widely praised and renewed talk of how the Oscars might honor work like Serkis’ here… performances which are not all CGI and not all human.

What We're Dorking Out About
The Emmy nominations …. We keeping hearing that we’re in the Platinum Age of Television, but when it comes to the Emmy nominations it’s just business as usual. The Emmys seem to take a giant leap forward last year, nominating criminally overlooked shows like “The Americans,” and giving Emmys to the leads of Orphan Black and Mr. Robot, neither of which are nominated this year, just like “The Americans.” Instead the Emmys took two steps back with nods for shows that are kinda played out like House Of Cards and Modern Family and honoring “movie stars” like Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Spacey, and Liev Schrieber for their TV work even if the performances are not the best TV has to offer. I’m not sure “Westworld” really deserves to be in the Best Drama category. I feel like that nomination is more the result of HBO’s big Emmy marketing budget. And I don’t want to even get into how much I hate that “Sherlock” is nominated for anything, because it was terrible.
There are some bright spots. I was happy to see all the Emmy nominations for A Handmaid’s Tale, Atlanta, Stranger Things and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. I’m glad to see so many SNL actresses nominated for supporting actress. Smith, what did you think of the Emmy nominations?

Show Rundown: In this week’s episode, friend of the show Ben Weddell, host of Big Ben’s Movie Show, joins Chris for a review of “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Why am I not reviewing it, too? Because I actually decided to wait to see it opening day. I’m not as inpatient as my co-host who just HAD to see it early and review it right away. OR maybe I have a life and I can’t stop everything to see yet another Spider-Man movie. Or maybe - just maybe - it’s a scheduling thing. In our second segment, we step into the ring and talk about Netflix’s new series “Glow,” about the Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling. And finally we end our show with what we’re dorking out about this week.
Topic 1: Spider-Man: Homecoming Review (No Spoilers) and the Semi-Annual State of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Well, a few weeks have passed, so that means a new movie in the octopus-like Marvel Cinematic Universe has been released.
But this one is a bit different. Spider-Man: Homecoming came out Friday, starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Michael Keaton as one of the few great Marvel villains seen on screen, The Vulture. Big deal, you may say. After all, Marvel is churning these movies out one every four months now. And who cares, you may say, this is the seventh major motion picture with Spider-Man since Sam Raimi’s original Tobey Maguire Spider-Man in 2002.
But this is the first time Spider-Man has had a whole movie all to himself in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and only the second time MCU uber-producer and Kevin Feige have worked with a rival studio, in this case Spider-Man rights holder Sony, to produce a movie for the MCU.
Was the wait and all the fanboy hype over the last two years leading up to this worth it? Joining me today to talk about Spider-Man Homecoming is friend of the show, Ben Weddell, host of Big Ben’s Movie Show and one of the biggest Marvel Zombies I know.
Topic 2: GLOW Season 1 Review and 'Slight' Gems of Netflix
Since Dorking Out has a no binge watching-required rule, we have waited long enough to talk about Netflix’s new series, “Glow,” about the Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling. Apparently this was a real syndicated show is the late 80s. I didn’t watch it, and I had never heard of it until I saw this show. This “Glow” is a fictionalized take on the creation of the show starring Allison Brie, Betty Gilpin and Marc Maron.
“Glow” is created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, who worked on “Nurse Jackie,” “Weeds” and “Orange Is The New Black,” and those shows DNA is all over “Glow,” especially “Orange Is The New Black,” and I mean that in a good way.
It’s on Netflix. It stars a mostly female cast. And it’s loosely based on a true story. Like “Orange is the New Black” uses prison as its jumping off point, “Glow” is using wrestling to tell funny, interesting, touching stories about women from a variety of backgrounds. In “Glow” Allison Brie is an aspiring actress who thinks she’s kinda above this fake wrestling show, and kinda like Piper in “Orange Is The New Black” she discovers a lot about herself and that she is supposed to be there. I really like this show, and I’m excited to see season 2.

Topic 1: Baby Driver and the work of Edgar Wright
BIG NEWS! A movie came out this weekend that isn’t part of franchise. It’s not a sequel. It’s not animated. It’s “Baby Driver,” written and directed by Edgar Wright, one of the most creatively successful writer and directors in the 2000s. Starting with the hilarious TV series “Spaced,” which also launched Simon Pegg,” Edgar Wright wrote and directed “Shaun Of The Dead,” “Hot Fuzz,” one of my favorite recent movies “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World,” and “The World’s End.” “Baby Driver” stars Ansel Elgort as a talented young getaway driver with kick-ass soundtrack playing in his iPod who works for heist boss Kevin Spacey. Things get complicated when Baby falls for a waitress (played by Lily James) at his favorite diner and he agrees to one last job. That’s always the thing, right? Love and one last job - it gets you every time. The movie also stars Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx.

Topic 2: Twin Peaks Review… 8 episodes down, 10 to go - that’s almost halfway
In an age of reboots, revivals and reimagined misfires, when David Lynch returned to television with 18 new episodes of his groundbreaking Twin Peaks show on May 21, we were hopeful but also a bit suspicious. Was this going to be an X-Files style return, where what was great about a show long since dead never did return to the new episodes, or was this a Star Trek: The Next Generation style return, where a new and transformed version of the thing we loved lived and breathed beautifully all on its own.
Well, we promised to return with our thoughts at the halfway point of the season, and we almost have. Eight episodes are down, 10 left to go. So we thought we’d bring our David Lynch loving cohort Scott Daigle, renowned videographer and onetime Lucasfilm mailroom maven to talk about Twin Peaks… has it revolutionized TV again? Does TV need revolutionizing anymore?

Topic 1: Cars 3 and the Decline of Pixar
Chris' Intro: In my movie going life, I have witnessed three game-changing developments in film which tower above all others. The first was Star Wars in 1977, which lead to the corporatization of blockbusters which reverberates to this day. Another is the release of Iron Man and the idea a movie can not just live on its own, but a series of different movies can create a greater whole than the sum of its parts. But in between these two events was another, no less magical arrival. It was the 1995 release of Toy Story by Pixar, and the revelation to the world the Pixar Animation Studios has been. From the first Toy Story, Pixar’s ability to create delightful, wondrous, endearing and often meaningful was something unseen in Hollywood since Walt Disney first revealed Mickey Mouse to the world.
Let’s just consider this run. 1995 saw Toy Story. Next was Bug’s Life, then Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, Wall E, Up, and Toy Story 3.
But everything beautiful that begins has some end. While Pixar seemed to have invented a system to pump out classic after classic, with the arrival of Cars 3, to say nothing of The Good Dinosaur or Monsters University or Cars 2 or, or, or… it’s apparent the glory days of Pixar are over.
So we have come to talk about Cars 3, praise Pixar, and discuss what this studio means to us, and how it might regain its glory.
Topic 2: Rough Night Review
Sonia's Intro: “Rough Night,” starring Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Zoe Kravitz, Ilana Glazer and Jillian Bell, is the first of two comedies this summer about a bunch of women going on a trip and going wild. “Girls Trip,” starring Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah, comes out in July.
“Rough Night” is about a group of college friends are reunited for a bachelorette party. But it’s not all drinking and silly bachelorette party games when they accidentally kill a stripper. It mixes body shots with a dead body. It’s like 1998’s “Very Bad Things” but it’s not nearly dark. “Rough Night” is way goofier than that. I went with my sister and one of my best friends. We are the target audience for this movie, and we were disappointed. It just wasn’t funny enough.
I don’t want to say that women want certain kinds of movies and men want certain kinds of movies, but after this movie we all thought the same thing, which was we wanted to see this movie without the accidental murder of a stripper. That part of comedy just didn’t work for us. But we really enjoyed the beginning of the movie with all the friends getting together, joking and drinking and being ridiculous. We enjoyed the part about college friends getting together as adults and trying to party like they used to. The murder plot line just didn’t work for us.
“Rough Night” only earned $8 million this past weekend, which is far below expectations. I think part of the reason this movie didn’t connect with the audience that made “Bad Moms” a sleeper box office hit last year is that stripper movie plot. I think the target audience for “Rough Night” isn’t interested in a goofy comedy about women accidentally killing a stripper. Of course, I can’t speak for all women. That’s just what we thought. Smith, what did you think of “Rough Night?”

Show Rundown: In this week’s episode, we review the first (and maybe the last) installment in Universal’s Dark Universe “The Mummy” starring Tom Cruise. In our second segment, Peter Brown from Assignment X joins us to talk about the Dark Universe, counting your movie franchise eggs before they’re hatched, Marvel’s new Black Panther trailer, and what the success of “Wonder Woman” means for the DC Universe. We’re talking about the whole messy subject of cinematic universes, the latest blockbuster trend that may or may not be fizzling out. All of that, plus what we’re dorking out about this week.
Topic 1: The Mummy Review
Universal’s kickoff to its new Dark Universe “The Mummy” opened this weekend to a disappointing $32.2 million. The movie stars Tom Cruise as Nick Morton, a soldier of fortune who steals valuable relics and sells them to the highest bidder. Nick stumbles across an ancient burial ground, because of course he did, and accidentally awakens a 3,000 year old mummy (played by Sofia Boutella). The movie also stars Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis and Russell Crowe and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - yes, that Dr. Jekyll, and yes that Mr. Hyde.
The movie is written by Tom Cruises’s regular writers, David Koepp, Dylan Kussman and Christopher McQuarrie, who have worked several “Mission Impossible” movies, so those “Mummy Impossible” jokes you’re seeing are pretty accurate. And the movie is directed by Alex Kurtzman, whose previous directing credit is 2012’s “People Like Us.” Kurtzman is probably better known for his role creating TV shows such as “Sleepy Hollow,” “Fringe” and the upcoming “Star Trek Discovery.” He also wrote some “Transformer” movies and the first two installments of the “Star Trek” reboot.”
This is a long way of saying that there are a lot of cooks in the kitchen. And there’s a lot riding on this movie, since it’s supposed to be launching a franchise.
Topic 2: Dark Universe and the state of Cinematic Universes
It’s been a mere nine years since Robert Downey Jr. strapped on an Iron Man suit and starred in Iron Man. That movie, with it’s little tease at the end hinting at a larger cinematic universe, launched the biggest blockbuster revolution Hollywood has ever seen, or at least since the first Star Wars. By creating a series of movies with elements which connected with one another, the Marvel series of movies have become more than sequels, they’ve created an entire alternate movie universe movie goers can’t seem to get enough of. To put it another way, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 came out in May to massive money, but in a way you could think of it as Iron Man 15. That is a massive temptation for the copy-happy suits in other studios looking to get in on the lucrative action of having a series of movies build up to a massive cross-over financial success, as Marvel had with Avengers 1, 2 and Captain America Civil War. Each earned over $1 billion.
But while other studios are eager to try to copy Marvel’s success, they have almost all failed.
Sony tried and failed with the relaunched Amazing Spider Man series, announcing A Sinister Six Movie, a Venom Movie and a Black Cat movie just before The Amazing Spiderman 2 crashed. While Universal is trying to create a connected universe with The Mummy, melding together their trove of monster characters (Wolfman, Frankenstein, Dracula, the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon), they have already failed once with Dracula Untold, which was supposed to launch their monster connected universe. But Dracula Untold crashed at the box office. That’s right, the Mummy is their second shot.
Then we have Warner Brothers’ attempt to get into the game with their DC universe. Wonder Woman finally seems to have them on track.

Topic 1: Wonder Woman Review
Unless you’ve been living on a magically hidden island you know that “Wonder Woman,” directed by Patty Jenkins, opened this weekend. There’s a lot riding on this movie. It’s not just another comic book movie. The DC Cinematic Universe really needs a movie that competes on Marvel’s level - which is a critically acclaimed and long-running franchise. “Wonder Woman” needs to be more than a box office hit, and prove that DC is capable of making a movie that audiences and critics love. And it needs to prove that a female superhero movie will make money. And it’s the first big superhero blockbuster directed by a woman. These are high stakes, and just like women have to do all the time in their careers - Wonder Woman needs to be better a movie and make more money than its male counterparts just to be considered equal. Smith will hate that I said that, but it’s true.
Well, this weekend it made more than $100 million, and it’s the biggest opening for a movie directed by a woman. But is it any good? We’ve brought in reinforcements for this review, a couple of real wonder women, Laura Smith, which is Smith’s better half, and Margo D. from the podcast Book vs. Movie is here to talk about “Wonder Woman” with us.

In our second segment, we have not one BUT TWO movie reviews for you, including “Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Baywatch.” And finally, we end our show with what we’re dorking out about this week, including the women-only screenings of “Wonder Woman” and savor-watching, which is the anti-binge watching.
Topic 1: War Machine on Netflix
Netflix, the little company that started out sending DVDs through the mail has grown over the last 10 years into the second most prestigious, interesting power in TV. In comedy, in dramas, in mini-series, they are now the first stop whenever the best creatives in Hollywood are pitching their new shows, with HBO largely falling to second. Their success, with House of Cards, Master of None, the adult Marvel stable of shows, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Making a Murderer… the list speaks for itself.
But now, they’re looking to move into movies in a serious, prestigious way. One of the first big swings at the large-scale Hollywood movies is this weekend’s War Machine, from Brad Pitt’s production company and starring Pitt as an army general trying to bring a rational end to the war in Afghanistan.
What does this move mean for Netflix’ continuing campaign to eat everything in Hollywood? Will they become a big force in prestige movies, as they have with TV, or is this a bridge too far? Also, is the movie any good?
Topic 2: Our “reviews” of “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Baywatch”
SONIA’S INTRO: We got two movie reviews for you: “Pirates Of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Baywatch.” Let’s start with “Pirates Of The Caribbean,” which was the #1 movie at the box office this weekend, pillaging more than $62 million. It’s the fifth movie in the franchise based on the popular Disneyland ride, starring Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, as well as Javier Bardem, and the return of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. “Baywatch” was the 98-pound weakling at the box office this weekend. “Pirates” kicked sand in its eyes. It made $18 million this weekend and got scathing reviews. It has 19% on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie reboot stars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, and it’s based on the 90s TV show phenomenon, starring David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, was about lifeguards who spend more time solving crimes than saving people from drowning. Show Rundown: In this week’s episode, we talk about “Twin Peaks,” which returned last night on Showtime. In our second segment, Peter Brown from Assignment X joins us to review “Alien: Covenant,” which was the #1 movie at the box office this weekend. And finally, we end the show with what we’re dorking out about this week, including Kevin Costner returning to westerns and the third season of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”

Topic 1: Twin Peaks
Unless you’ve been stuck in the Black Lodge for the past few years, you know that “Twin Peaks” returned Sunday night with two of the 18 all-new episodes on Showtime. If you are one of those weirdos who has never watched “Twin Peaks,” then I’m going to explain to you why “Twin Peaks” is kind of a big deal.
Created by filmmaker David Lynch and Mark Frost, there was nothing like “Twin Peaks” on network television in 1990. Now the line between television and movies are blurred. Actually, there are no lines. Movie stars regularly make TV shows, and TV stars make movies; BUT, in 1990, a TV series created by a filmmaker as highly regarded as David Lynch was really unusual and special.
The elevator pitch for Twin Peaks was Agent Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MacLachlan, comes to a small Northwestern town to investigate the murder of the Laura Palmer, the seemingly perfect teenager, the homecoming queen dating the football team captain, etc. etc. But, of course, the show was much more than that. Twin Peaks was a mix of murder mystery, horror, dark comedy and drama. It could be absolutely heartbreaking and absolutely terrifying in the same episode. Creatively, Twin Peaks’s influence cannot overstated. It’s DNA is all over TV shows including genre shows such as “The X-Files” and “Lost” and more recently “Fargo” and “Riverdale,” as well as more mainstream TV such as “Northern Exposure.”
“Twin Peaks” aired for two seasons for a total of 30 episodes. It lost its creative footing after the murder of Laura Palmer was solved midway through the second season, and the show struggled in the ratings and was canceled. Lynch wrote and directed the prequel “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me,” which I think is underappreciated, and a small taste of where Lynch would later serve up with “Lost Highway” and “Mulholland Drive.”
So, that’s why everybody is so excited that Twin Peaks is back. We watched the first episode, and we’ve got good news that gum you like is going to come back in style. Smith, what did you think about the return of “Twin Peaks?”
Topic 2: Alien: Covenant with Peter Brown
Over 30 years ago, Ridley Scott directed one of the best science fiction movies and one of the creepiest horror movies, and it was the same movie. That would be 1979’s Alien. Since then he’s made a career of lush, amazing looking movies which are a bit hit and miss on the storytelling side.
That goes double for Prometheus, the 2012 movie marking Scott’s return to the franchise he began. But by then, and maybe until today, the Alien franchise has become one of the most beat up, battered, messed around franchises in Hollywood history. For every classic sequel, like James Cameron’s Aliens, there were two or three deformed creatures, like the possibly underrated David Fincher entry, Alien 3, or the no-holds bar trainwreck like Alien: Resurrection.
When it came out, Prometheus had a lot of fans excited for a top shelf alien story, but the final movie left a divided fanbase, half liking it, half loathing it.

The official 2016-2017 TV season is almost over. Of course, the idea of the “official” TV season is over, too, but we’re going to pretend it’s still a thing. Back in September, we did an episode with Peter Brown from Assignment X in which we shared the new TV shows we were most looking forward to. This week, the TV Networks are meeting with the press and unveiling their new lineups and their list of shows that didn’t make the cut, so we figured it’s a good time to have Peter back on to revisit our picks and see how we did.

Topic 1: Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Review
Even though it’s only the first week of May, the summer movie season has officially started with the release of “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2,” the 15th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which made $145 million this past weekend, pushing the Marvel Cinematic Universe past $11 billion. The misfits from the first “Guardians Of The Galaxy” return, including Chris Pratt as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, and the voices of Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon and Vin Diesel as Baby Groot. Michael Rooker as Yondu also returns, and we are introduced Mantis an empath who can feel people’s emotions played by Pom Klementieff and Ego The Celestial played by Kurt Russell.
Joining us to talk about “Guardians” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is David Tracy, who co-hosts my other podcast Old Movies, New Beer and works for Chaos Group, which creates the rendering software that is used in pretty much every TV show and movie you love, including “Game Of Thrones,” “The Walking Dead,” “Doctor Strange,” “Rogue One,” “Deadpool” and - of course - “The Spongebob Squarepants Movie.”

Topic 2: The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu
The 10-part miniseries “The Handmaid’s Tale” debuted last week on Hulu. Based on the 1985 book by Margaret Atwood, the miniseries stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Samira Wiley and Alexis Bledel from Gilmore Girls, and is set in a dystopian near-future in which women have no rights. Most women are infertile in this future, but there is a handful of women who can still have children. They are forced to have babies for wealthy and powerful couples. I believe one of the characters actually refers to themselves as “two-legged wombs.” Elisabeth Moss is our narrator and main character, Offred, whose husband is murdered and 8-year-old daughter taken away. We see in flashbacks how we got to this future, and it’s almost scarier to me than the future which women are forced to have babies, but it’s more recognizable. It seems familiar. “They can’t do that. This is blow over.” I’ve said those things, or someone has said them to me. It’s chilling.
