Hey there, dorks. With the recent arrest of the Golden State Killer and the new Netflix documentary series “Evil Genius,” true crime stories have been on my mind. And when I thought, “I want to talk about true crime” I immediately thought of Margo D., because she is a serious true crimer. Not only is Margo super into true crime stories, but she also hosts every podcast in the world, including Book vs. Movie, The Best Neighbors Podcast, Not Fade Away and Fit Bottom Girls.
In this podcast, Margo and I share our five favorite true crime movies. We didn't want to be criminally negligent, so Margo also picks five true crime TV movies, and I choose five true crime documentaries.
True crime movies we talk about include Zodiac, Bonnie and Clyde, Capote, Star 80, The Untouchables, Heavenly Creatures, The French Connection, Goodfellas and All The President's Men.
True crime TV movies include Texas Justice, Fatal Vision, Small Sacrifices, Murder In Texas and I Know My First Name Is Steven.
True crime documentaries include The Staircase, The Thin Blue Line, Capturing the Friedmans, Paradise Lost and OJ: Made In America.

We review A QUIET PLACE... eventually.
Directed by John Krasinski (aka Jim from THE OFFICE) A QUIET PLACE is a horror movie about a family who is living in silence while they hide from some creepy monsters that hunt using sound. Pretty good idea, huh? Written by Krasinski, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the movie stars Krasinski’s real-life wife Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe.

In this episode we’re going to talk about READY PLAYER ONE, which is based on the novel by Ernest Cline and directed by Steven Spielberg.
It’s 2045, and everyone spends all their time as their avatars in a virtual reality world called the Oasis, which was created by Mark Rylance who looks a lot like Garth from Wayne’s World. Before he died, he created a game with hidden easter eggs throughout the Oasis, and anyone who collects them all will win control of the Oasis. Tye Sheridan stars as Wade, a poor teenager who lives in The Stacks (trailers stacked on top of each other) in Columbus, Ohio, and he wants to win the game and be rich and famous. Olivia Cook is Artemis, a girl Wade meets in the Oasis, and she is trying to win to prevent an evil corporation lead by Ben Mendelson from winning control over the Oasis. READY PLAYER ONE also stars Lena Waithe, Simon Pegg and all your memories from the 80s and 90s.

In this episode we’re going to do a deep dorking out about John Hughes’ “Sixteen Candles” with BFF of the show Peter Brown, managing editor of Assignment X.
Just in case you’ve never seen “Sixteen Candles” here’s my little summary: Molly Ringwald’s family forgets her 16th birthday amid all the chaos of her sister’s wedding planning. Also, she’s being stalked by the King Of The Dorks, Anthony Michael Hall, and she’s in love with hunky Jake Ryan, who she believes doesn’t even know she exists. Released in 1984, “Sixteen Candles” also stars Michael Schoeffling, Paul Dooley, Justin Henry and in small roles, John and Joan Cusack.

We welcome Chris Taylor, a top notch journalist at Mashable and author of the fantastic HOW STAR WARS CONQUERED THE UNIVERSE.
What's the topic? Fandom, how it's evolving and broken, how it's working just fine and a lot like it was in the ages before social media, and how Twitter might be wrecking nerdy fandom too.
Or maybe it's just a bunch of online noise and we're living in a nerd golden age. There's a lot to talk about so jump on in.

We’re going to review A WRINKLE IN TIME, which opened this weekend to so-so reviews and $33 million at the box office, coming in second to BLACK PANTHER, which continues its box office domination.
Directed by Ana DuVernay (who also directed the documentary THE 13TH and SELMA), and based on the beloved book by Madeleine L’Engle. The movie stars Storm Reid as Megan Murry, a middle school student whose brilliant scientist father (played by Chris Pine) has disappeared while working on a way to travel through the universe. This is not a spoiler, but four years after his disappearance, Megan, her younger brother Charles Wallace (played by Deric McCabe) and her friend Calvin (played by Levi Miller) must search the galaxy for him before something called The It (not to be confused with with Pennywise IT) destroys the universe with its negativity. Luckily, they have the help of three, ummm, beings to help them on their adventure: Mrs. Whatsit (played Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (played by Mindy Kaling) and the god-like Mrs. Which (played by god-like Oprah).

Just in case you don’t know what The Contender is about let me tell you: The vice president has died, and President Jeff Bridges names Senator Joan Allen as the replacement. But Senator Gary Oldman has thoughts and feelings about her confirmation, and digs up some dirt from her past.

We did it. We finally did it. For almost two years, we have hemmed and hawed on this podcast about how we love movies but the Oscars sucks. For almost 90 years, the Oscars have been Hollywood’s lavish self-congratulations that in some way or another always manages to embarrass true movie lovers the world over. In 1957, it was Around the World in 80 Days… I’ve never heard of it you say?... that beat classics like The Ten Commandments and Giant for best picture. In 1969, it was when 2001: A Space Odyssey wasn’t even nominated for best picture. In 1990 Driving Miss Daisy won best picture. Driving Miss Daisy. This is also the body that snubbed Al Pacino’s Godfather performanced, but gave him an Oscar for Scent of a Woman. This is the body that never gave Alfred Hitchcock an Oscar for best director. This is the body that didn’t give Humphrey Bogart the Oscar for his Casablanca performance.
Point is, they don’t know what they’re doing or how to do it. So Sonia and I have put our money where our mouths are and reformed the Oscars and tonight we’re going to tell you how the Oscars would go if the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences was serious about honoring great movies AND making a watchable telecast.
We have written three blog entries on fixing the Oscars. Part 1 talks about what’s wrong with the current Oscars. Part 2 talks about how the nominating and awards would work if they were done right (hint, comedies and genre movies would stop getting fucked over), and Part 3 talks about what the 2018 Oscars would be like in the alternate universe where we ran the awards.

We do a deep dorking out on 1978’s Superman: The Movie starring Christopher Reeves, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, Glenn Ford and two stars spanning the movie ages… Marlon Brando as Superman’s Kryptonian father, Jor-El and the Little Rascals Jackie Cooper as Perry White, editor of the Daily Planet. Directed by Richard Donner and scored with what might be my favorite John Williams score of all time, Superman was the first big studio comic book movie and is still seen as the model for making a comic book movie right on the silver screen.
Joining us to talk about it is a voice you may know, he’s my favorite living critic, an accomplished and much sought after movie music writer, and the host of the new podcast Bond of Geekdom, Jeff Bond.
