Show Rundown: In this week’s episode, we review the new Netflix series, A Series of Unfortunate Events,” based on the books by Lemony Snicket aka Daniel Handler. In our second segment, my husband David Tracy, the biggest Sherlock fan in the all the land, joins us to solve the mystery of what to do when a show you love goes off the rails. All of that, plus our favorite headlines of the week. We’ve got a lot to dork out about, so let’s get this podcast started.

Link to watch: https://www.netflix.com/title/80050008

So January 13 saw the arrival of season 1 of Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events based on a series of books by Daniel Handler. It’s a black comedy about three orphaned children who live through, well, the title of the show.

This Netflix version stars Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton, Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes and guest stars a heavy hitting cast with Joan Cusack, Aasif Mandvi, Catherine O'Hara, Don Johnson and Alfre Woodard.

Topic 2: Sherlock - What to do when a story you love goes off the rails

Sherlock finished its fourth season on PBS last week. Sherlock’s seasons are comprised of three 90-minute movies based on the books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and it stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock and Watson.

Show Rundown: On today’s show we’re going to be talking about awards, and the ridiculous exercise of giving awards to artistic achievements as though they were trophies at the end of a baseball season. You can’t score La La Land or Manchester by the Sea like box scores. Totally unrelated, we’re going to talk about the Golden Globes, which were given out last night, and the Writers Guild Awards, whose nominations came out, and how to make the Golden Globes not quite so ridiculous.

Topic 1: Golden Globes, Oscar Predictions, and How to Make the Golden Globes Better

Winners

Steve Carrell and Kristen Wiig

Meryl Streep's Acceptance Speech

Topic 2: Writers Guild nominations

The Writers Guild nominations were announced last week, and because we take our Oscar picks so seriously, we need to talk about them. Also, we needed a Topic 2.
